Documented proof Tinnitus and Hyperacusis affects Hearing on a Daily Basis
Earlier we talked about the use of phones and how they might help people with tinnitus and/or hearing loss. Here's the previous link in case you missed it. Suffering From Hearing Loss or Tinnitus, Your Phone Might Help .
Today, we're going to show you an example of what people with tinnitus experience, when using the advanced setting on their cell phones, to help them adapt to their condition. In this study we have learned that the phone needs to be adjusted everyday, like setting an alarm clock. It can't be set just once. It's not a one size fits all deal.
As you can see from the images provided the settings vary depending on the person's level of tinnitus that day. Now, for a person with hearing loss this would be greatly different because it's NOT going to fluctuate that much and your ear specialist can monitor those changes for you, to let you know if you need to adjust your settings.
However, with conditions like tinnitus even hyperacusis, BOTH conditions are known to vary. Many call the conditions a rollercoaster ride.
The good thing about these advanced settings on your phone is they DO help make everything more clear, when wearing a headset for your phone to use these settings. But we have also found that the volume may still seem too loud and cause discomfort even pain for those who have hyperacusis, even on the lowest setting. And if you do not have the headset plugged into your phone, you do need to readjust your phone for general use or background sounds will over power anything you hear.
It's been four years I've had phone restrictions with my tinnitus and hyperacusis. I've always complained about sounds on the phone itself, background noises on the other end of the phone when someone is trying to speak to me. Sometimes people are busy doing something with papers or moving about, eating while talking even. It can all be painful, cause a processing issue, frustrating and I have hung up the phone a number of times because I just can't torture myself like that. Sometimes it's the person's voice themselves.
Using the advanced setting on your phone can help clear all that mess up but again it's not a perfect accommodation. There are still issues and it's all still being documented and tested to see if it can be done on a daily basis, without spiking one's tinnitus or hyperacusis.
There's one more thing you should be aware of, not all phones have these advanced setting, which can be found under sound and volume control and the setting may vary. But here you can see documented proof of just how much conditions like tinnitus and hyperacusis affect people.
