Tinnitus discovery may lead to new treatment

NewsHour science correspondent Miles O'Brien reports on the science behind tinnitus and the search for a cure. My tinnitus started 2 days before my surgery in April of 2013. I believe because I had to wait two weeks for my surgery the pressure and pain inside my head was to much and that's what brought it on. However after waking up from the surgery the tinnitus was still there and it remains 24/7. You can't imagine what it's like to one day just have something like this that won't go away. On top of the tinnitus I had come down with directional issues, meaning I can't always tell the direction a sound is coming from and with the more sounds I encounter the harder it becomes for me. I get overwhelmed by the sounds, confused, disoriented by it. Add on to the hyperacusis (overly sensitive to sounds)and this once very independent, active and self motivated individual feels like my independents is stripped away from me.
